Going Green

For many of us, going green is an important issue to ensure we do our part for the world. Whether it be turning off a light to save energy or whether we walk rather than drive, simple things like this can help make a real difference by reducing our carbon footprints. All of us can take action for our planet, the list below details the action we can take.

Action You Can Take

- Install insulation into your roof/loft. By doing so you can save around 20% of your heating energy, saving you hundreds of Dollars/Pounds. Although it can be costly to install initially, it will work out as a good money saving deal for you.

- Turn off applications, lights & the TV when you are not using them. It is very easy to forget to turn a lamp off when you are in a hurry, but by doing so you will save energy and money.

- Try walking more, it's not only a great way to keep you fit and to save petrol/diesel but it will help reduce your carbon footprint.

- Public transport can be very annoying, especially trains when they are overbooked. But when you can, catch a train to save you time on your journey and reduce your transport emissions.

- If you can afford to and you are willing, getting a smaller car helps reduce the amount of petrol/diesel you use.

- While Hybrid cars are good, be wary as they are often much harder to produce so more pollution is created in the manufacturing process.

- Getting more energy efficient light bulbs is a simple way to reduce the overall amount of electricity you use.

- The meat industry is the world's biggest polluter, by not eating meat you can be significantly more eco-friendly, even if you drive a hummer!

- Investing in solar panels or even a small wind turbine is a great way to be energy efficient and you won't have to pay any more electricity bills.

- Send a letter to your local Member of Parliament or Representative to ask them to push for more environmentally friendly bills.

- Try buying more local foods. This will not only support your local economy but will help save many air miles from shipping the product to your country.

- Replace old applications such as fridges, if you can, with more energy efficient ones, this will turn out to be a great investment.

Conclusion

While it is difficult to follow all of these steps, we can at least try to follow some of them in order to become more environmentally friendly. Although some of these steps are costly in the short run, these eco-friendly steps will end up saving you money in the long run. By making investments into energy saving applications, insulation or solar panels you can ensure a brighter future for our planet. By simply turning one light off every time you go out, you would be able to hold your head up high and say 'I am doing my bit for the world'.
