The town of Deva (Transylvania - Romania) was filled with the corpses of dozens of stray dogs shot during the night.
Eyewitnesses said the dogs were executed by people who drove around the city in land vehicles, directly from the cars. As a coincidence: the second day early in the morning a Green Area Management vehicle was gathering the corpses and the mayor of Deva congratulated the killers, according to Realitatea.net.
The dogs were shot with air guns loaded with poison, according to eyewitnesses. "It seems the people who killed the strays acted exactly like the Chechens, driving dark land vehicles and after shooting the dogs, drove away in a hurry," eyewitness Maria Ardelean told Hunedoreanul, in comments taken over by libertatea.ro.
The corpses were then picked up early in the morning by Green Area Management workers, the eyewitness said.
Although the deeds are atrocious, Deva Mayor Miricia Muntean's response truly shocked the public. He congratulated the people who shot the dogs. "I congratulate those who have shot dogs.
. It was legal. I ask all hunters to take measures against them, not to let me deal with this alone. It's the only problem I couldn't solve until now. I'm glad I see we got rid of them," the mayor was quoted as saying by Hunedoreanul.
As a consequence, the Bucharest Animal Police filed a criminal complaint against the mayor. Muntean is accused of instigating ill treatments and acts of cruelty against stray dogs.
